The making of Sweet Caroline

Many editions begin as commissions (apart from the nudes) but latterly most sculptures have tended to be uniques. ‘Sweet Caroline’ is the charming daughter of one of my former students and the second of her daughters I was asked to sculpt. The rapport was great which certainly helps the creative process… and sculpting from life all the more enjoyable!

Working with Talos

Visiting Talos is like coming home to family and friends because it’s a small, intimate foundry with talented and dedicated people who inevitably become friends.

I’ve worked with large foundries in the States and UK that have regular staff changes. It is frustrating to have to frequently explain what is required in the casting of my sculptures. Hence the decision to cast with the steadfast and professional Talos team was an easy one!

About Desmond

A Fellow of the Royal Society of British Sculptors, Desmond specialises in the female nude and portraiture, particularly the whole figure.

Noteworthy lifelike depictions of historical and contemporary personalities include Princess Margaret, Felix Dennis and Mark Twain. He was born in Bermuda, and has helped found the Bermuda National Gallery, and divides his time between there and Europe with commissions all over the world.
